Cameroon Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Action Over Election Unrest, Government Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he incited "violent post-election demonstrations".

At least four demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth presidential mandate.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a statement rejected by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on demonstrators have alarmed the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for moderation.

Minister's Claims

Earlier this week, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he referred to as "unauthorized" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also criticised him for announcing success in the election.

He noted that the opposition leader's "accomplices involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, won the 12 October presidential election with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had previously stated that he rejected a rigged election - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

Following the vote count, he said that armed men used lethal force on protesters present near his house in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 civilians.

Inquiry Announced

Earlier this week, the interior minister revealed that an inquiry would be launched into violent incidents prior to and following the announcement of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators were killed," he said, without giving a exact count of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

Nji noted that multiple members of the security forces also received significant wounds.

Current Situation

Even though the interior minister maintained the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in some parts of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established roadblocks on Tuesday, and ignited tires on the roads.

Experts alert that the post-electoral violence could lead the nation into a governmental instability.
