Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this constitution," the officials declared in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The clip seemed to provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a combined announcement condemning the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our United States with great national pride and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical digital publications and retract his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and duty to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must unite and censure the former president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the federal government who conspired to arrange a video message to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
