Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of undesired gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised donated to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts are said to be stored in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been gathering dust for years.

The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question centered on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a political career.
