Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The elder brother, a work associate of the Syrian woman, stated to authorities last week that there had been an incident—but disputed intentional killing.

Informing journalists earlier, a official for the state prosecutor stated the brothers were being held on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".

The identities of those concerned have been withheld by law enforcement, in compliance with Austrian law.

Their going missing was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who is based in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Authorities revealed the 55-year-old suspect informed them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then discovered to be utilized overseas repeatedly.

But when investigators entered the victim's residence, her cellphone was discovered.

An individual also stated overhearing a loud noise in the dwelling, and screams of "mum" on the day the pair were believed to have vanished.

A broader police investigation was initiated, with officers finding multiple communications transmitted via the victim's mobile—such as a notice of quitting to her workplace and texts to the male colleague.

Authorities confirmed a significant cash transfer was also transferred to the individual.

A senior police official stated to media representatives on recently that a storage facility had been secured before the vanishing and a freezer had been installed within.

The two suspects took out the appliance from the unit on the date the victims vanished, the official stated. And a seven days after, they purchased a second unit.

Authorities state they consider this suggests the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the bodies," the official commented.

Mayr—from the legal authorities—stated the precise timeline is still unclear, but the bodies were carefully placed and were not found during a previous house search.

Although the brothers were detained in the summer, it was not until November 12 that the 55-year-old confessed to an event and to storing the victims. He rejects any plan to cause death, officials confirmed.

In a related development, his younger brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but rejected knowledge of a killing.

The two suspects are currently in pre-trial detention in jails in separate locations, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "suspected killing of two... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and reveals a cruel system".

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
