The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
