The Gunners' Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

The North London club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, reportedly valued at around £10m per year, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.

Such scrutiny is due to the country's reported backing for the M23 militia in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to discuss the partnership.

Partnership Structure and Objectives

Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a public entity.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal entered into and upheld this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

However, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while executing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and promote increased engagement in sport across the country.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's aspirations.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to conceal the partnership emblem on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

Around that time, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Meanwhile, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
