Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
